These teas are often oxidized somewhere between 12-85%. some are very light (pouchongs) and almost more green tea like and some more robust and possibly even molasses like (Big Red Robe-Da Hong Pao). They vary greatly in taste and flavor. Steep many times as they have many levels of flavor. The whole leaf is used and once you steep it up you can see the beauty of the leaf.
